Frequently Asked Questions

You may have some questions before your visit.
Please see below or visit our pre-visit advice page.

Before you have your first colon hydrotherapy session you will be asked to complete a consultation form. The therapist will then discuss in more detail any related health challenges and to find out what your objectives are and how we can help you get there. The therapist will then explain in depth how the treatment works and also answer any queries or concerns you may have. Once the treatment is completed, the therapist will then give you more specific lifestyle/ dietary advice based on your health challenges and how the session went. At this point supplements or further treatments may possibly be recommended if felt needed by the therapist. At no point will any pressure be placed upon you regarding any recommendations given. Your first visit will last roughly an hour and a half.

These include conditions such as active infections, active inflammation (for example, diverticulitis, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, etc) a painful fissure or painful haemorrhoids. In such cases treatment cannot be carried out until they are healed or in remission. Diseases such as congestive heart disease, severe uncontrolled hypertension, severe anaemia, liver cirrhosis, kidney disease, severe haemorrhaging and colo-rectal carcinoma are absolute contra-indications to treatment as are some physical conditions such as severe abdominal or inguinal hernias. If you are in any doubt, please discuss with our therapist, Gemma before attending your appointment to avoid disappointment.

Enemas and suppositories are useful for emptying the rectum and maybe the sigmoid. Laxatives are a particular concern because the colon can become dependent on laxatives with long term usage and they do not always effectively clear the whole organ. A colonic on the other hand, due to the volume of water used is very effective in cleansing all of the colon without causing any harm.

Everyone reacts very differently to getting colonics done and a lot of this depends on the severity of your issues. During a colonic one can expect to have the sensation of “needing to go to the loo” quite a lot and when colon is ready to release a substantial amount of waste, abdominal cramping can briefly occur. The therapist uses specialised massage techniques to aid the treatment and also to keep you feeling as relaxed and comfortable as possible. Your comfort levels are the prime concern of your therapist, especially on your first visit when nerves have a small part to play. A lot of clients actually like getting colonics done and can find it quite a relaxing and cleansing experience.

Your modesty will be preserved at all times. You keep on the top part of your clothing on and the lower half of your body is completely covered throughout the treatment. Single usage, disposable underwear can also be provided to help you to feel a little more covered up during the session. With regards to the treatment itself, the equipment we use is called a “closed system”, the reason it is called this is because any waste that leaves the body during the treatment is enclosed at all times in the tubing. This ensures there is no exposure to odour, waste or sound during the treatment. It really is the most pleasant way to clean out unpleasant things. You will be in a treatment room with a private en-suite toilet, only yourself and the colon hyrotherapist will be in the treatment room.

In the hands of a trained therapist colonic hydrotherapy is not only safe, but may be beneficial. The equipment used is disposable and used only once and the treatment room is cleaned and disinfected between each client. The bowel’s natural bacteria is not disturbed to any large degree, it repopulates within 24 hours and with far more efficiency after a colonic than before, as toxic matter is removed good bacteria stands a far better chance of dominating the digestive tract, however for those with bacterial imbalances, a course of pro-biotics may be recommended to offer a helping hand.

There is no certain way you will feel after a colonic. It depends on your individual health issues, how the treatment went, how many treatments you have had etc. Directly after the treatment most clients do report feeling clean and empty inside, lighter, refreshed and feeling quite hungry! Many clients have a treatment done then go back to work afterwards. You may have another bowel motion that day or you may have no bowel motion for days depending on the strength/ tone of your colon and how well you have eaten and hydrated your body after the treatment.

Rarely will one session cleanse the whole organ effectively. Your colon is approximately as long as you are tall and has the ability to stretch up to three times it’s diameter. In general we do recommend at least 3 visits if you have not had one done before or haven’t had one done for years. People with long-term digestive issues may need more. Once you have received your first treatment, the therapist will make recommendations based on your personal objectives. Once we’ve got you to where you want to be a maintenance treatment every now and then is advisable to keep you feeling great for the long term.

Due to the amount of abdominal massage done during a colonic we advise it is best not to have a large meal within 2 hours prior to the treatment to avoid feeling nauseous. You do not need to do anything else. However, for those wishing to gain maximum benefits from having a colonic there are some further suggestions. Just check out the “Pre-visit advice” page. Should you have any further questions, please feel free to email our Colon Hydrotherapist, Margaret via the contact page. Alternatively you can call the clinic.
